System Engineer

Tasks and Responsibilities:

As a System Engineer, you would be a part of the Systems Engineering department, which is responsible for the:

  • Daily supervision of our co-locations in Amsterdam and also Miami where we, among other things, monitor the following:
    - Installation of servers (CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise, Linux)
    - Installation of software (MySQL, Lighttpd, Nginx, etc.)
    - Installation of appliances (Zeus ZXTM, Switches, APC PDUs, and others)
    - Posting of updates on the OS, services, and/or applications
    - Monitoring and maintaining services

  • Stocking the cabinets in the co-locations (servers, appliances, cables, etc.)
  • Creation of RPM-based packets for rollouts of central software
  • Automation of many areas through the use of the newest techniques/software in the open-source world (Cobbler, Spacewalk, Puppet, func, etc.)
  • Daily monitoring of business continuity through, for example:
    - Keeping an eye on the bandwidth in the different co-locations
    - Checking the performance (CPU, IO, MEM, etc.) of the servers
    - Identifying potential problems
Concept Responsibility

As a System Engineer, you would be specifically responsible for one of our concepts, by which is meant one type of site (based on appearance/layout/content/target audience). You would be responsible for several sites that fall under this concept and would “own” a cluster of web servers and databases under this umbrella. You would consult regularly with the rest of the System Engineers and share the progress and developments within your cluster.

The concept team is made up of people from various departments, such as Advertising, Portal Management, Project Planning, Development, and Operations. You would represent System Engineer in your concept team and will be deeply involved in the further development of all sites under this concept. You would help ensure the growth, stability, and the further development of the concept.



Your Profile:

  • Bachelor’s-level education
  • Basic knowledge of Linux
  • Knowledge of programming is a plus
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to express yourself in both Dutch and English, in speaking and writing
  • Stress-resistant, team player, accurate, and flexible
  • With a valid (Dutch) driver’s license
